Life has slowed down! Instead of running around the countryside chasing high-school softball games, messing around in the city on the weekends, or squeezing in a Red’s game on a night my daughter doesn’t have an event, we are staying in town and hanging around the house. It’s something right out of the past, and much like my childhood, life seems more straightforward, and I am enjoying it.

Yes, of course, there are trade-offs. We won’t get to see our daughter and her classmates finish their softball career, and we don’t get to watch the boys finish out their baseball careers. Unlike the Red’s, many of them, including her, have stepped on the diamond for the last time. It’s sad to think about it, but I wouldn’t trade what we have gained for it.

Instead of sitting in cold dugouts and on hard bleachers talking pitch counts, swing paths, and throwing mechanics, we are discussing things of greater importance, such as college, careers, and immediate opportunities to support those decisions. As a family, we are playing games like Scrabble and watching movies. We haven’t done these things in years. Before the quarantine, we were so busy that when we did have a moment at home, we usually went our separate ways and crashed out. Now, we are working on things around the house and using our time on more essential endeavors that will have a more significant longterm impact. In essence, life is more straightforward!

I will say that I do miss the freedom to go anywhere at any time, and I also miss visiting with family, especially my oldest daughter. She had to spend a couple of weeks in self-quarantine, and now has a restricted schedule due to her work in the medical field. So, everything in this slowed-down world is not all rosy, but for the most part, it is not too bad. Of course, the virus has not directly impacted our families, like it has so many others.

I hope I can remember to slow down and stay focused on the important stuff when we open back up and return to some sense of normalcy.
